About Me

My name is Dr. Jonell Benson~Cobbs and I am a nurse educator, author, business owner, and advocate for drug addiction. I have over 20 years of nursing experience under my belt. Six of those years working as a Correctional Health Nurse where I had the opportunity of helping detainees battling addiction. This had inspired me to open my own Opioid Treatment Program in early 2017.

Case Study

The United States is currently in an unprecedented opioid epidemic. According to CDC, there were more than 500,000 opioid related deaths from 1999-2019, and these rates continue to rise today starting from the ages of 12 and up. Additionally, the rise in fentanyl related deaths has become a widespread issue as more and more drugs are being laced with fentanyl.

ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs in combination with drug treatment counseling have been put into place to assist with opioid addiction, and have been proven to be clinically effective in combating opioid use disorder (OUD). This includes addiction to both, illegal and pharmaceutical drugs. The goal of the MAT program is to help patients achieve full recovery and lead a self-directed life. One of the challenges we face during this epidemic is the lack of access to treatment centers. As opioid addiction continue to rise, so does the need for medication assisted treatment programs/treatment centers.

Dr. Benson shared vital information which included mistakes she made along her journey. The course outlined the financial aspects, the at risk population, policies and procedures, and key stakeholder roles and responsibilities. The stakeholders shared insight and walked you through a typical day, and allowed Q&A sessions. The student workbook was a guide that was easy to follow and could be utilized as the blueprint to to starting a MAT program. The course also highlighted building and maintaining business credit. In conclusion, the MAT course was an investment that was well worth it! Every aspect of being a successful business owner was highlighted! As a result I'm more motivated to make an impact in the population that needs it the most.
